Fair City star Sorcha Furlong remembers Karl Shiels as she weds playwright partner Ken Harmon in emotional ceremony

Fair City star Sorcha Furlong wed her playwright partner Ken Harmon in an emotional service over the weekend as she remembered co-star Karl Shiels.

Known for playing Orla Molloy, the actress said "I do" in front of close family and friends yesterday.

But their summer wedding was tinged with sadness after the shock death of her friend and co-star Karl Shiels earlier this week.

The RTE star paid tribute to Karl, who played the role of Robbie Quinn for five years, during her big day.

After tying the knot, she said: "It’s been a really bitter sweet week for myself and Ken, we tied the knot yesterday but we lost a really good friend this week in @KarlShiels.

"Karl you were in our thoughts and hearts and wedding speeches yesterday."

Sadly, the news of Karl's death emerged last Monday.

Tributes from his friends, colleagues, family and co-stars poured in before he was laid to rest in Dublin on Thursday.

Nigel Mercier said: "Been too shocked today to tweet anything about Karl Shiels until now. He was such a force on set and one of the funniest guys I've ever met. Especially just before a take when it would take all my acting skills to be serious on 'action'. He'll be sorely missed. RIP Karl"

Tom Moran added: "In absolute shock to hear that Karl Shiels has passed away. Karl was a mentor, supporter, critic and friend and, when you made him laugh, you knew you were really onto something.

"He had a spirit that shone, onstage and onscreen. Irish theatre will be forever in his debt"

Sorcha and Ken got engaged after nearly three years together back in January 2018.

Sharing the exciting news with the fans of the soap opera, she posted a picture of her eye-catching engagement ring. Alongside the snap, she said: "Ken Harmon, the award winning playwright and writer of LEGEND for @rte, one of my fav tv shows, is now my fiancé."

She joined her gal pals for a fun hen party last month.

They took to The George over the June bank holiday weekend where they played bingo and watched iconic drag queen Shirley Temple Bar perform her long-running show before dancing the night away.

Sharing a picture from the party, the excited bride to be said at the time: "Thank you @declanbuckley @shirleybar  for such an amazing hen.

"We all had a blast, the show was AMAZING."
