Fair City star opens up on the tragic loss of his son

Fair City’s Jim Bartley opened up on how the tragic loss of his son Emmet has taught him how to cope with grief and hardship more than 30 years on.

In 2019, tragedy struck the Carrigstown crew when Tom Jordan, best known as Charlie, passed away in June, followed by the sudden death of Karl Shiels, who starred as Robbie, just weeks later.

Off the set, tragedy also reached into Jim’s home life as he lost his brother Padraig and sister Moira, suddenly, within weeks of each other in November of the same year. Opening up on how he coped with the grief, which was followed by a year in lockdown, Jim told
the Irish Mirror: “Just before the pandemic arrived I buried a brother and sister within a fortnight of each other.

“I’ve been dealing with grief... my mum and dad died years ago and I lost a child, a young fella, nearly nine-year-old, of asthma in 1987. So I have the philosophy of what can you do about it?

“You have to let it happen. And you can grieve the way you grieve.

“And then you must get on with your life.”
