Fair City actress Jean Costello who played Rita Doyle in the soap has sadly died

Legendary Fair City Actress Jean Costello who played Rita Doyle for 24 years in the iconic Irish soap has died.

The sad news was confirmed to Dublin Live by Jean's sister Sylvia Murray with funeral details currently being arranged by the family.

She paid tribute to her sibling on Facebook following her death and said: "All my love. Jean was a lady. At least she’s up there now keeping my nanny company, our two angels."

The actress was an integral part of Fair City when the Doyle family first hit our screens in 1989.

Her character Rita Doyle was Married to Bela - played by Jimmy Bartley - who was living in England when the show first started and would send cheques home to Rita and her six children: Helen, Jimmy, Yvonne, Suzanne, Darren and Louise.

In 2013, Carraigstown was forced to say goodbye to Jean's popular character who was written out of the show following an on-screen death.
