The RFU warned that the threat of drugs in rugby “remains real” as they published their annual Anti-Doping Report, with the number of both drugs tests and violations on the rise in the professional game.
In 2017-18 professional rugby players tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs for the first time since 2011, with Yorkshire Carnegie’s Brandon Staples and Wasps’ Ashley Johnson receiving four-year and six-month bans respectively.
In addition, four players failed illicit drugs tests, up from three the year before, but there were no second violations so the players remain anonymous.
This month, however, Jake Pope of Sale Sharks was banned for six months for twice testing positive for cocaine.
Stephen Watkins, the RFU’s anti-drugs programme manager said: “Whether it is deliberate doping or accidental ingestion, the threat to the game remains real.
"A proactive programme offers the best possible chance of keeping the sport clean.”
Phil Winstanley, rugby director at Premiership Rugby, said there was “no room for complacency”.
