Failed Nottingham Forest transfer proves big blow for target as he becomes free agent

Kamil Grosicki has been released by West Bromwich Albion at the end of a season when he was twice targeted by Nottingham Forest.

The 32-year-old winger was wanted on loan by Forest last summer but the deal fell through amid a dispute about paperwork being submitted in time.

Boss Chris Hughton retained an interest and was strongly linked with a return move for the player in January, along with Championship rivals Middlesbrough.

But again there was nothing doing and Grosicki stayed at the Hawthorns until a retained list announced by Albion now confirms his contract won't be extended. He only made three league appearances for a side that slipped towards relegation.

Remaining at West Brom and not moving to Forest proved to be a blow, with Grosicki then left out of Poland's Euros squad, with the president of the country's FA suggesting he would have had a better chance if he'd made a January switch.

Portsmouth expect to lose race for Forest 'target'

Portsmouth are resigned to losing out in the race for prolific AFC Wimbledon striker Joe Pigott in the belief that he is bound for the Championship.

The 27-year-old front man is a free agent after coming to the end of his contract at Plough Lane and Portsmouth insiders are pointing to interest from Nottingham Forest, as well as Derby County and Birmingham.

Bristol City, however, are understood not to have him at the top of their list despite some reports to the contrary.

BristolLive write: "Pigott hit 20 goals and grabbed five assists in 45 appearances for the Dons in League One this season, and at 6ft2" he would be an aerially adroit replacement for the departing Famara Diedhiou, who has left Ashton Gate on a free transfer.

"But the former Maidstone United, Cambridge United and Charlton Athletic forward is only being tracked as a secondary transfer target as things stand, with the Robins considering another (currently unknown) forward as a priority."

Potential loanees Forest could look at

Nottingham Forest are expected to try to utilise the loan market this summer as Premier League clubs let more of their best prospects out again for a taste of proper football.

Forest brought in Luke Freeman, Cyrus Christie, Anthony Knockaert, Filip Krovinovic and James Garner in on loan over the last season, with varying degrees of success.

But overall, only 34 players aged 22 or under have dropped into the Championship from the Premier League this season, compared with 44 in 2019/20.

In particular the big six – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd and Spurs – only let out just 13 players to second tier clubs, down from 24.

The links have already started and there is no doubt that Forest fans would love to see a return of Garner from Manchester United.

But he is not the only young player that Championship managers will have had scouts checking out.
