Failed asylum seeker in weed operation caught in Calderwood home

Neighbours alerted police after a family home in Calderwood was turned into a large scale cannabis farm.

It led to failed asylum seeker Kongres Cuti appearing at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

The 32-year-old Albanian admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis at a three-bedroom property in Calderside Grove on September 17.

Jennifer McLaren, prosecuting, said neighbours were suspicious about the smell coming from the house and the sound of fans.

She told the court: “When police officers arrived they noted an incredibly strong smell of cannabis.

“They found the entire house had been converted for the purpose of growing cannabis.

“There were 36 cannabis plants in the living room, 21 in an upstairs bedroom and 13 nursery plants in the loft space.

“Another bedroom was being used as a drying area for herbal material.”

Cuti was detained when he arrived at the house at 4pm that day. He was on his phone and “acting suspiciously”.

Officers seized £750 in mixed notes from him.

Inquiries revealed Cuti was a failed asylum seeker who shouldn’t be in the UK.

Ms McLaren said the 70 plants in the house were worth an estimated £28,800.

The value of herbal cannabis recovered was £43,320.

However, defence agent David Kinloch disputed the value of the herbal material, saying he would produce a report suggesting this was “discarded material”.

Sheriff Douglas Brown called for a criminal justice social work report on Cuti, who has no previous convictions.

He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on February 12.
