FAI remain tight-lipped over reported change of plans to host Euro 2028 rather than 2030 World Cup

THE FAI were last night remaining tight-lipped over reports that plans to host the 2030 World Cup with Britain would be dropped in favour of a bid for Euro 2028.

UEFA is believed to be looking at a further expansion of the European Championships on that occasion, to 32 teams.

With associations on both sides of the Irish Sea fearful that a World Cup bid in 2030 would fail, it has been suggested they have now turned their attention to the Euros in six years’ time.

Asked for a reaction to reports in the UK media yesterday, an FAI spokesman said they had “no comment to make.”

UEFA are thought to favour a 2030 World Cup bid including Spain and Portugal, while Uruguay have also been mentioned as potential hosts, 100 years after staging the first ever finals.
