FAI investigating potential player ineligibility case in the League of Ireland

The FAI is investigating a potential player ineligibility case in the League of Ireland.

It surrounds recent Wexford FC recruit Ola Adeyemo and whether or not he had international clearance to play in four recent games.

Adeyemo was signed from English non-league side Lewes in July and the FAI has confirmed it received an International Transfer Certificate from the English FA.

The striker then played in four First Division matches; a 3-1 win at Athlone, a 0-0 draw against leaders Cabinteely, a 2-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers II and a 4-0 loss to Cobh.

But he has not featured since, playing no part in a league defeat to Drogheda United, last week’s FAI Cup exit to Athlone or Monday’s league defeat to Longford.

Mirror Sport understands that was because the English FA contacted the FAI again to flag an issue with the International Transfer Certificate.

It emerged that Adeyemo signed documents with Swedish club Ytterhogdals during lockdown, but the transfer never materialised because of the pandemic and so he joined Wexford.

Adeyemo, 25, has played for UCD, Dundee United, East Fife, Watford, Norwegian side Valdres FK and English non-league outfits Walton Casuals and Lewes.

An FAI spokesman confirmed the case is an “active investigation” but made no further comment. Wexford FC have also been contacted for comment.

The FAI rulebook says: “If a player takes part in an official match while being ineligible to do so, his team shall be sanctioned by forfeiting the match and paying a fine.”
