FAI Cup quarter-finals up in the air with potential fixture clash

Dates for the FAI Cup quarter-finals are up in the air amid the prospect of an embarrassing clash with the Scottish Challenge Cup.

And a slew of international call-ups could also decimate next weekend’s last eight fixtures.

The games are pencilled in for September 6, 7 and 8 but Bohemians and Waterford are supposed to be in Scottish Challenge Cup action that same weekend.

Bohs are away to Airdrie while Waterford are due to host Hearts Colts at the RSC in a competition now known as the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup.

The Waterford-Dundalk game could be postponed anyway if Stephen Kenny names Zach Elbouzedi and Michael O’Connor in his Ireland Under-21 squad tomorrow.

So too could Sligo-UCD and Crumlin-Bohs if Kenny turns to College pair Liam Scales and Conor Kearns again and the Gypsies’ Darragh Leahy and Danny Mandroiu.

Kenny’s charges have a key European qualifier against Armenia at Tallaght Stadium on Friday week before facing Sweden away four days later.

But non-league Crumlin boss Martin Loughran is relishing a clash with Bohs – whenever it is played.

“It’s a great draw for us, a local derby and it’s great for the club and the area,” he told Morning Ireland. “We’ll do our best to keep home advantage but we’ll see what the FAI come up with.”
