Fading beauty: Pierre-Auguste Renoir's Gladioli in a Vase

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Gladioli in a Vase
The almost photographic blur in this painting’s dazzle of colour is a striking instance of impressionism. Even in looking at motionless flowers in a vase, Renoir rejects the precision of, say, a Dutch flower painting for a sense of the immediate and the passing. It is as if he wants to cling to this fading beauty, this ever-changing nature, and in that passion is a profoundity as well as a sensuality.
