Facundo Pellistri loan risk is paying off for Manchester United

Facundo Pellistri has yet to register his first goal for Alaves - but the Manchester United loanee continues to play a key part in their battle to avoid relegation.

As things stand, the Spanish club are four points clear of the danger zone in La Liga.

However, third-bottom Real Valladolid hold a game in hand on Pellistri's side, who continued a promising unbeaten run with a hard-fought point against Valencia on Saturday night.

Heading into that one on the back of two straight wins, Alaves picked up a useful share without Pellistri.

Indeed, the United loanee - who arrived at Old Trafford in October before then being sent out to the Spanish club - sat out the Valencia draw with a muscle problem.

It's a recurrence of the same injury that saw him sidelined for a previous clash with Athletic Bilbao this month.

Despite missing those two games, the Uruguayan prospect has impressed during his loan spell away from United.

Even in a losing cause to Atletico Madrid last month, the 19-year-old drew high-praise from compatriot and former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who scored the only goal of that clash as Diego Simeone's side continue sit top of the La Liga standings ahead of El Clasico rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Posting a picture of Pellistri and himself post-match, Suarez added the caption: "A pleasure. Continue like this and good things will come."

It was rare praise indeed from a man with such strong Liverpool connections, although United supporters agreed after taking note of their player's display - albeit in a losing cause - against a side who are gunning for the Spanish title this season.

Since then, aside from missing two games through injury, Pellistri started and played 69 minutes during a 3-1 defeat to Celta Vigo - but Alaves have subsequently given themselves fresh hope in the relegation scrap.

Indeed, victories over Huesca and Villarreal followed in the space of three days.

Pellistri didn't start either of those matches, but the decisive goal in a 1-0 verdict against Huesca came after he had been summoned by manager Abelardo Fernandez midway through the second half.

It was a similar story against Villarreal, too, as the contest was evenly poised at 1-1 upon his introduction.

Just a minute after replacing Spanish midfielder Jota, though, the United winger underlined his tag as a lucky charm when his teammate Edgar netted to settle the scores and preserve Alaves' cushion on the bottom-three places.

Having arrived at Old Trafford from Uruguayan side CA Penarol for around £7.5million in October, Pellistri has made eight appearances for Alaves - with four of those coming from the start. The club had considered keeping him in their ranks for the duration of the campaign but the player was willing to take the gamble to go on loan - and it is now paying off.

In the time between joining United and jetting off to Spain for a loan spell, Pellistri was introduced to life in Premier League 2 - scoring twice in his first six appearances.

Despite then encountering rapid changes to his situation at Old Trafford, the winger has already spoken about the benefits of being exposed to top-level European football.

In a previous interview with ESPN South America, Pellistri said: "I am very happy despite the rapid changes, faster than I imagined. I was hoping to have a little more time in Manchester, but on the club's side they have organised what to do with each player."

On his first outings in Spain, he added: "The coach gave me the last two games and he is giving me confidence. My team-mates too."
