Key claims in Labour’s manifesto

Brexit

Claim: Jeremy Corbyn said Boris Johnson’s claim that he will get Brexit done was “a fraud”.

Verdict: It is not fraudulent — if the deal is approved by Parliament, the UK stops being an EU member. But Mr Corbyn is right to point out the Brexit process will continue for many years. Experts say an extension to the transition beyond 2020 may be “unavoidable”.

Environment

Claim: Polluted air contributes to more than 40,000 premature deaths a year.

Verdict: This should be viewed with caution. Air pollution generally makes illnesses worse rather than directly killing people.

Energy

Claim: Energy use in buildings makes up 56 per cent of UK emissions, making it the most polluting sector.

Verdict: This does not seem quite right. Transport is the biggest sector for emissions at 27 per cent. It looks as though Labour added together emissions from energy supply (24 per cent), business (17) and residential (15) sectors.

Tax

Claim: No rises in VAT, income tax or National Insurance for anyone earning less than £80,000 … no rises for 95 per cent of taxpayers.

Verdict: Both statements are correct. But other pledged tax changes could ultimately affect people earning under £80,000.
