No injuries were reported after a fire broke out in a Garfield Ridge factory on the Southwest Side.
Firefighters were called about 6:30 p.m. for a blaze in a metal plating factory in the 7000 block of West 60th Street, Chicago Fire Dept. Cmdr. Frank Velez said.
Employees had already evacuated the building by the time fire crews showed up, Velez said. Some employees had escaped from the roof through a fire escape.
The department took precautions for corrosive chemicals stored inside the factory, and extinguished the fire by 7:50 p.m., Velez said. Its cause was unclear.
About a quarter of the building’s interior was damaged, Velez said. Investigators with the fire department were on scene.
One firefighter was transported to a hospital for observation due to heat-related issues, Velez said.
Relief crews were called in order to limit firefighters’ exposure to extreme heat, Velez said. Calling an additional “rehab” crew is typical when the outside temperature in near 90 degrees, he said.
