Fact-checking Diana: The Musical - cruel nicknames, blazing rows and strange quotes

Netflix's new Princess Diana musical tells the story of the Princess of Wales's ill-fated marriage to Prince Charles through the medium of show tunes and ballads.

The Princess, played by Jeanna de Waal, learns of her own death while on stage at the end of the show while flashing lights almost obscure the whole set, imitating the camera bulbs that haunted her.

Diana: The Musical is the latest in a number of films and productions about the mother-of-two, who died in 1997, including the upcoming Kristen Stewart blockbuster Spencer.

And as Netflix found with their BAFTA-nominated series The Crown, when it comes to the royals, viewers sometimes struggle to discern history from artistic licence.

While the costumes are bang on in terms of the outfits Diana really wore, some scenes and quotes seem just too wild to be true.

But what of the Diana musical, which was pushed back for over a year due to the pandemic, really happened - and which scenes are total fiction?

In the Diana musical, Charles proposes to Diana while saying "whatever love means, anyway".

And he did say almost those exact words during an interview - but not in his proposal.

In the real 1981 interview, a journalist asked newly-engaged Charles and Diana if they were in love. Diana replied: "Of course."

But Charles butted in: "Whatever 'in love' means," as Diana then laughed awkwardly, and Charles continued to say that "in love" was open to interpretation.

Diana later said she was "traumatised" by Charles' response to the journalist.

According to Andrew Morton's biography of Diana, Charles' real life proposal was a very simple one, but Diana was so taken aback she thought he was joking, and she laughed.

"The Prince was deadly serious, emphasising the earnestness of his proposal by reminding her that one day she would be Queen," Morton wrote.

Charles' friendship with Camilla and the necklace

Camilla tries to give Diana unwarranted advice and is a guest at her wedding to Charles (Netflix)

Prince Charles married Camilla after Diana's death, and was widely rumoured to have been having an affair with her while he was still married to Diana.

In the musical, Diana seems weary of how often Camilla seems to "pop up" at events, offering her "big sister" advice to help her snare Charles - advice that is not warranted.

And Camilla helps Charles chose a necklace for Diana as a gift at the beginning of their relationship.

There is no evidence the necklace scene ever actually happened, but Camilla's presence during Diana's marriage became clear during Diana's BBC interview with Martin Bashir in 1994.

"There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded," she said.

In the musical, Charles promises Diana he will end his relationship with Camilla when he finds out Diana is pregnant, but fails to do so.

And Camilla really did attend Charles and Diana's wedding, as seen in the Netflix show, with her then-husband Andrew Parker-Bowles, the Commanding Officer of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, who had a significant role in the procession.

Charles and Camilla are said to have had a brief relationship before their respective marriages, and their affair is thought to have begun in 1986, five years into Charles' marriage to Diana.

In 2005, Charles and Camilla tied the knot in a civil ceremony with Prince William as the best man but with one notable guest missing - the Queen, who took time to warm to their union. However, the Queen did attend the reception.

Diana and Camilla's birthday party row over Charles affair

In Diana: The Musical, a fed up Diana confronts Camilla at her sister's birthday party, and refers to her as a "Rottweiler" behind her back.

Surprisingly, this scene is actually based on truth, as Diana really did once claim she showed up to a 1989 birthday party for Camilla's sister, Annabel Elliot.

She claimed she confronted Camilla about her affair with Charles, which had just resumed, according to The Express, and called it "one of her bravest moments".

"I walk into the house and stick my hand out to Camilla for the first time, and think 'phew got over that,'" Diana said in real recordings that were secretly taped by a pal at Kensington Palace in 1991.

She said Charles was "baiting" her the whole journey, asking her why she was even coming, and she decided to greet Camilla with a formal handshake instead of her usual kiss hello.

While at the party, Diana said she realised she couldn't find Charles or Camilla, and when she went to find them, other partygoers tried to stop her.

She said she found a "happy little threesome going on" with Charles, Camilla and another man chatting away, and she asked for a private word with Camilla.

"So I said, 'Camilla, would you like to sit down?' So we sat down and I was terrified of her.

"And I said, ‘Camilla, I would just like you to know that I know exactly what’s going on,'" Diana said.

"She said, 'I don’t know what you’re talking about.'

"I said, 'I know what’s going on between you and Charles, and I just want you to know that.'

"And she said to me, very interestingly, she said to me, ‘You’ve got everything you’ve ever wanted. You’ve got all the men in the world falling in love with you, you’ve got two beautiful children, what more do you want?’"

"I want my husband," Diana said she replied.

She added to Camilla: "Don’t treat me like an idiot."

On the car journey home, Diana said Charles was over her "like a bad rash".

"I cried like I have never cried before," she said, adding it was seven years of pent-up anger coming up.

The 'Rottweiler' jab

In the Netflix musical, Diana calls Camilla 'the Rottweiler' - a big dog with a stereotype of being bullish and aggressive.

And Diana really did call Camila that, according to her pal Simone Simmons.

Simmons wrote in her 2005 book Diana: The Last Word that Diana used this nickname "because she looks like a dog – and because once she has got her teeth into someone she won't let go".

Meanwhile, it's reported Camilla called Diana "that mad cow".

Prince Charles' desire to have a daughter

Diana had two sons - Prince William and Prince Harry, but in the musical, Charles is disappointed in her not giving him a daughter.

And according to Diana herself, this really was true.

In Andrew Morton's book, Diana is reported to have said: "Charles and I were very, very close to each other the six weeks before Harry was born, the closest we've ever, ever been and ever will be.

"Then, suddenly, as Harry was born, it just went bang, our marriage. The whole thing went down the drain."

She went on: "He wanted two children and he wanted a girl," and alleges when Harry was born, Charles said: "Oh God, it's a boy... and he's even got red hair".

The 'revenge dress'

Diana can be seen donning a stunning black gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline, and a pearl necklace choker in one of the later scenes in Diana: The Musical.

The ensemble sing about the gown being a "feck you dress" and Diana adds: "Revenge looks best in an F-you dress."

And this one is thought to be true - it's an exact replica of the dress Diana wore in 1994 for a Vanity Fair party, and it broke royal protocol.

As depicted in the musical, the dress was a last minute decision after Charles appeared to confirm his affair with Camilla was back on, that very same night.

An interviewer asked him if he had been "faithful and honourable" during his marriage, and he replied: "Yes - until it became irretrievably broken down, us both having tried."

Fast-forward a few hours, and Diana was strutting into the party looking "a million dollars", just as she had told her stylist she wanted - revenge indeed.
