Texas Democratic U.S. House Representative Jasmine Crockett came out swinging after President Donald Trump invoked emergency powers to take federal control of the D.C. Metropolitan Police for 30 days, deploying National Guard and federal agents, and bypassing local authorities amid controversy over legality and D.C.’s autonomy.
In her post on X, Crockett wrote, “The man in the White House wants to ‘crack down’ on crime in D.C.… cute. The audacity of sitting in the Oval Office with felony charges and thinking you can lecture anyone on ‘law and order.’
On May 30, 2024, a New York jury found Trump guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments during the 2016 presidential campaign. This conviction made him the first U.S. president to be found guilty of a felony.
Additionally, Trump faced other criminal charges, including a federal case related to the 2020 election and a Georgia state case. Both of these cases were dismissed following his re-election in November 2024.

Crockett added in her post, “This isn’t about safety — it’s about power, control, and distraction,” likely meaning distraction from the Epstein files controversy that has plagued Trump’s second term and divided his base.
Crockett said, “If Trump cared about crime, he’d start by looking in the mirror.”
As of August 2025, Washington, D.C. has experienced a significant decline in crime rates, contradicting Trump’s characterization of the city as “out of control.” As Fox 5 D.C. reports, according to the Metropolitan Police Department, violent crime decreased by 26% compared to the same period in 2024, with homicides dropping from 112 to 99, and assaults with deadly weapons falling from 667 to 534.
Property crimes also declined, with burglaries decreasing from 543 to 437, and overall crime rates dropping by 6%. Despite these improvements, carjackings remain a concern, though they have decreased from a peak in 2023.
Trump’s decision to federalize D.C. police and mobilize the national guard has been met with criticism beyond just Crockett’s post from local leaders and experts, who argue that the federal intervention is unnecessary and may violate the Posse Comitatus Act, which limits military involvement in domestic law enforcement. Critics also point out that the city’s crime rates have been declining, suggesting that local efforts are effectively addressing public safety concerns.
Responding to Crockett’s post, one comment said, “Exactly. The audacity of the man facing 91 felony counts, with 34 convictions, trying to play ‘America’s top cop’ is peak hypocrisy.
