Facebook won’t match Twitter ad ban, says Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg has defended his firm’s decision to run political adverts after Twitter announced it would ban them on November 22.

It came as Facebook faced criticism after disclosing it would not fact-check most political ads.

Mr Zuckerberg spoke about Facebook’s belief “that political speech is important”.

“Some people accuse us of allowing speech because they think all we care about is making money, and that’s wrong,” he said.

“The controversy this creates far outweighs the very small percentage of our business that these political ads make up.”

Facebook’s revenue in the past three months was up 29 per cent to $17.7 billion compared with the same period last year.

It has agreed to pay a £500,000 fine after an ICO investigation into the use of personal data in political campaigns, without admitting any liability.
