Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram down as users raise issues across Europe

Three social media sites are down across Europe.

Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram have been reported as having outages across the continent, according to downdetector.co.uk .

Since 3pm, there have been over 2,000 reports for each site being down.

The reasons for the outages are not clear. WhatsApp users are reporting not being able to download pictures.

The problems with WhatsApp and Instagram also appear to be affecting Facebook. Facebook owns WhatsApp and Instagram.

The outage also seems to be affecting North America.

Disgruntled users have taken to Twitter, which is not down, to show their frustration. Many thought it was a WiFi issue before realising what the issue was.

Does Facebook own WhatsApp?

WhatsApp was created in 2009 by computer programmers Brian Acton and Jan Koum - former employees of Yahoo! Koum came up with the name WhatsApp because it sounded like "what's up".

WhatsApp uses data or WiFi networks to allow users to send messages for free. It was released in 2009 and had 250,000 active users. Facebook bought WhatsApp in February 2014 for $19.3billion (£14.64bn). It now has well over one billion users globally.

Who owns Instagram?

The photo-sharing app was acquired by Facebook in 2012 when the app had just 30 million users. Facebook bought the company for $1 billion in cash and stock.
