Facebook user cost Premier League £400,000 after selling illegal streams

A computer whiz conned BT Sports, Sky and other global organisations out of £400k with an illegal streaming service.

Steven Underwood, 34, shared illegal streams to live EPL football matches and films to subscribing customers after advertising his services on Facebook .

Underwood, from Redruth, Cornwall, previously pleaded guilty to two charges and appeared at Truro Crown Court.

He has handed a suspended sentence on Thursday for his offences under the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 and the Fraud Act 2006

Judge Robert Linford told him: "You were engaged in highly professional and completely illegal activity.

"You were responsible for members of the public being able to access material for which they would otherwise have to pay significant money to the operators including streams of live sports events.

"You advertised your service using Facebook and as much as £400,000 worth of trade was diverted from the legal provider of services.

"This went on over a protracted period of time."

Judge Linford said that Underwood's lack of previous convictions and other mitigation allowed him to suspend what would be an otherwise immediate custodial sentence.

He was given a 12 month sentence, suspended for two years and must complete 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days.
