Facebook statement as social media platform crashes worldwide for more than three hours

Three of the world's largest social media and messaging platforms have crashed leaving users unable to send or receive messages.

Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram servers went down on Monday evening leaving users worldwide unable to access their services for over three hours.

In a statement on their official Twitter account, Facebook said they were "working to get things back to normal" at 5.22pm.

It read: "We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience."

Mark Zuckerberg's social giant has received a peak of 58,000 reports of users unable to access their accounts at about 4pm, although the number has now gone down to just under 30,000.

Up to 76% of reports were related to the website while 14% were linked to the app.

Whatsapp and Instagram - which are both owned by Facebook - have both made similar statements on their Twitter accounts apologising to users.
