After announcing it would give employees working from home because of coronavirus a $1,000 bonus to defray expenses for childcare, setting up home offices and other needs, the company said it was sending all its contractors home and paying in full even those unable to work from their residences.
Facebook said Tuesday that the continued pay was more meaningful than a one-off payment.
The Menlo Park social media giant did not specify the number of contractors being sent home, or which jobs they ordinarily perform. The firm is believed to have tens of thousands of contract workers globally.
Facebook has said in a news release that its contract workers are "employed by outside vendor partners to work either part-time or full-time and provide important services across content review, security, culinary, transportation and other teams."
