Facebook rolls back on Cancer Focus NI video ban

Facebook has backed down over a decision to ban an important video by a Northern Ireland cancer charity.

The social media giant banned a Cancer Focus NI video that showed women how to check their breasts.

It featured local radio presenter Rebecca McKinney and was launched as part of breast cancer awareness month, which is October.

However, Facebook left the charity "baffled" after it banned the video from their Facebook page, saying: "Some audiences are sensitive to different things when it comes to nudity."

However, later on Monday, Facebook rolled back and allowed the video to be shared.

A Cancer Focus NI spokesperson said: "Great news!

"Facebook has changed its mind and has now posted our video. We're delighted that Facebook has seen sense, changed is mind and has posted our professionally made, educational and tasteful video.

"We hope that it will be widely viewed and be of real use to thousands of women."

In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, the social media giant said 'sorry'.

They said the "post was removed by mistake and has been restored to the Page".

A spokesman added: "Whilst adult nudity is not allowed on Facebook, we do make exceptions for posts which are shared for educational or medical reasons, or to raise awareness for causes such as breast cancer awareness. We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused.”

  • Cancer Focus NI is asking women to have a fun girls’ night in to raise funds for breast cancer support for younger women in Northern Ireland. With the money raised the charity will facilitate and fund a unique new service that will give younger women a chance to speak to experts on a wide range of topics such as infertility and sexual relationships as well as to meet others in a similar situation.
