Facebook apologise as Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp suffer hours of outage

Facebook appears to be up and running again following hours of intermittent outages across the world.

Users in Europe, the US, Asia and Africa can now access Facebook again after the unusually long connectivity issues.

A Facebook spokesperson said: "We're aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps.

In a later update, the firm added: "The issue has since been resolved; we're sorry for any inconvenience."

The social media site founded by Mark Zuckerberg, as well as Facebook Messenger, Instagram and Whatsapp, was down for users in North America, Europe and parts of Asia, including the Philippines.

The cause of the Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp login working again as thousands report outage was not immediately clear, but it is thought that thousands of users were unable to access the site via mobile or on desktop.

Problems were reported from around 11.40am onwards.

#FacebookDown, #InstagramDown and #WhatsappDown trended globally as users took to other social media platforms to express anger at the failures.

Website downdetector.uk was reporting a massive surge in reports about the Facebook, with the majority of flags were reporting a total outage of the site.

At around the same time, reports of Whatsapp, owned by Facebook, also being down surged.

Reports suggest the platforms have stopped working for around 60 per cent of users globally.

Facebook, which acquired Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014, has more than 1.52 billion active users every day.
