Facebook down: Social media giant responds to global outages as millions affected

Facebook has responded after millions of people were affected by a global outage on a number of apps.

Monday afternoon saw chaos ensue as WhatsApp, Instagram, Spotify, Messenger and the Facebook app stopped working.

Downdetector, which tracks outages, logged nearly 80,000 reports for WhatsApp and more than 50,000 for Facebook, as well as over 20,000 for Instagram.

Statistics from the website suggests the outage is affecting users of Facebook services across the world.

Facebook said: "We are aware some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We are working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologise for any inconvenience."

More than 20,000 WhatsApp users reported issues using the global instant messaging service from about 4pm Irish time.

A total of 43 % of users experienced issues with the app, with 27% being unable to send messages.

Mark Zuckerberg's social giant Facebook has also been struggling with 36,298 users reporting issues.

Up to 76% of reports were related to the website while 14% were linked to the app.

Instagram users also appear to have been struck by the outage with 21,300 taking to Downdetector to report their struggles.

Half of these had issues with the app, 50% while 26% had server connection problems and 24% struggled with the website.

Facebook's communications executive Andy Stone has tweeted to say the social media giant is aware of the current issues and is "working to get things back to normal."

Twitter however, doesn't seem to have been affected, with people already flocking to the social media giant to check they are not the only ones struggling with the other platforms.
