Facebook down as users complain of 'total blackout' and news feed not working

Tens of thousands of Facebook users in North America are unable to access the social network.

According to Down Detector the service went down at around 4pm local time.

The site, which monitors issues with online platform, said there was a huge spike in people reporting they could not access Facebook at all.

An error message facing users states: "This Page Isn't Available Right Now.

"This may be because of a technical error that we're working on to fix. Try reloading this page."

New England and Chicago are showing high rates of outages.

Many have taken to Twitter to complain about the site being down.

Author Mike Allton wrote: "Thousands are reporting that they're unable to refresh their feed or even access Facebook.

"Similar reports surfacing for Instagram and WhatsApp. #FacebookDown"
