Facebook down as hundreds of users report outages on social networking site

Hundreds of Facebook users have reported outages as the social networking site appears to be down.

There have been 346 reports of Facebook outages in the last 24 hours, according to Down Detector, as well as hundreds on Instagram.

Many have been taking to Twitter to report their issues - with photos of the Facebook website showing an error message which says 'sorry, something went wrong'.

The error message adds: "We're working on getting this fixed as soon as we can."

One user tweeted: #Facebook is down. Now I'm forced to do actual work."

Another frustrated user said: "Ugh, #facebookdown more often than up. I have time to waste!"

This is the second time in the last few weeks that the site has gone down.

Users reported on November 19 that Facebook and Instagram were down - with issues continuing to plague technology firms.

According to DownDetector, thousands of people were having problems with the social media sites.

The messaging app WhatsApp was also said to be affected.

Social Media giant Facebook has changed its corporate name to Meta in a major rebrand.

It aims to broaden its horizons with moves into sectors like VR (virtual reality) and CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg feels the name change will better reflect this.

Mr Zuckerberg said the existing brand could not "possibly represent everything that we're doing today, let alone in the future" – hence, the rebrand.
