Facebook apologises on Twitter after massive outage saw it go offline for seven hours

Facebook has issued a grovelling apology after it went offline for more than seven hours.

The social media giant went into apparent meltdown for most of Monday evening as four platforms suddenly stopped working - Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.

Problems began at around 4.45pm, and went on until 11pm before services started to work again.

Users have been able to access Facebook - although many have reported problems posting, which caused Facebook further embarassment as it ended up having to say sorry via rival platform Twitter.

The firm said: "To the huge community of people and businesses around the world who depend on us: we're sorry. We’ve been working hard to restore access to our apps and services and are happy to report they are coming back online now. Thank you for bearing with us."

It then followed up the post by tweeting: "We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible."
