Facebook and Instagram release Ireland's most talked about moments of 2019

Facebook and Instagram have released Ireland's most talked about moments in 2019.

Electric Picnic, Brexit, Donald Trump's visit and the death of Gay Byrne were some of the topics that dominated the conversation over the course of the year.

Lady Gaga performance at the Oscars also caused a stir in February, while the Game of Thrones finale got people talking in May.

While Conor McGregor and Maura Higgins were some of the local names to make a big splash on social media over the last year.

And the UFC star still tops the list of the most followed Instagram accounts in Ireland, with a staggering 32million followers in total.

Head of Facebook Ireland Gareth Lambe highlighted the diverse mix of topics on the list, and how social media allows everyone to explore their interests.

He said: “Every day, people come to Facebook to connect with their friends and family, to support the causes they believe in and talk about the things that matter to them.

"As with previous years, it’s incredible to see the range of topics discussed on Facebook by people in Ireland; from local politics and sport to global entertainment and world events.

"This year is no different with highlights including Munster Rugby, Brexit, Electric Picnic, Game of Thrones finale and the Amazon forest fires.

"Instagram is about bringing you closer to the people and things you love through creative expression and inspiring people to discover and explore their interests.

"The 2019 most followed accounts and hashtags, highlights that people in Ireland have a love for sports, interiors, nature, and of course Love Island.”
