If we’re to gain anything from the VW diesel emissions scandal, it’s the well overdue recognition that face masks are a strong look right now. The real story about air pollution breaches is here, where you would expect it to be. But, in timely fashion, face masks were sighted at the catwalk shows earlier this month and now a style pecking order has started to emerge.
Ahead of the curve to own the anti-pollution style ground is British brand Freka. It has launched an ergonomically and fashionably sound unisex face mask – they describe it as “a bold blend of science and style” and “inspired by the classic styling of British tailoring”, all for the princely sum of £160. Highlights include a scent of Japanese Hinoki wood, and an “intricate exhalation valve system”, which includes a replaceable vitaliser that purifies the air as you inhale.
Overlooking the distinct shades of Bane, Batman’s masked adversary, after weighing up the benefits, I think it’s probably worth investing in one. Style-wise, it‘s elegant, almost chic, even if even it looks like a tiny face bra in the box. Pair with athleisure (think joggers, and a structured tee) in monochrome or navy, as seen here. Hair up, if only to avoid a hair/elastic tangle, a strong brow given that it covers most of your face, and minimal foundation because it’ll only rub off. Avoid chokers and high necks because it can feel a touch claustrophobic. There you go, full fashion approval.
