Face of man who cost Bulwell shop £7,500 after sledgehammer burglary

This man left a convenience store in Bulwell more than £7,000 out of pocket after smashing the windows with a sledgehammer and stealing thousands of pounds worth of cigarettes.

Delwyn McCaffery, of Donbas Close in Bulwell, used the weapon to enter the McColl's store on Highbury Road just after midnight on September 26 last year.

He fled the scene with £3,700-worth of cigarettes.

The shop owners were left reeling from the loss of trade and repair costs to the windows.

Nottinghamshire Police says the store lost around £2,800 in trade as well as £1,000 towards the window repairs, leaving them with a loss of £7,500.

Detectives managed to identify 40-year-old McCaffery on CCTV and he was later arrested at his home.

The very sledgehammer used in the burglary was found lying around in his shed.

McCaffery was charged with serious aggravated burglary and was sentenced to two years imprisonment at Nottingham Crown Court.

He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £149.

Detective Constable Colin Kirkup from Nottinghamshire Police said: “Burglary is incredibly damaging to businesses, as it targets their property, inconveniences the business and its staff and leaves hard-working people out-of-pocket.

“Crimes targeting shops are far from being victimless crimes and we must be clear that we will not tolerate this behaviour in our county. I am pleased McCaffery has been put behind bars and has been held accountable for his behaviour.”
