Face of man jailed for attacking victim with hammer and running him over in a car as he fled

A man has been left suffering "flashbacks and nightmares" after he was attacked with a claw hammer and run over by a car.

Steven Gillon, 36, attacked his victim with the hammer, threatened him with knives and then drove over him in a car as he fled back on June 24 last year.

Gillon, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 10 years in prison at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday, May 20, for the "brutal attack" which happened in a field in Carton-on-Trent.

The victim was left with a fractured knee and four deep wounds to his head which required over 20 stitches.

Gillon also received a two-year prison sentence, which is to run concurrently, for making threats to kill.

A few months after the attack, the victim woke up from his sleep to voicemail messages threatening to commit the same acts as he had done back in June.

The victim, who has not been named, said: "After the attack I became depressed and a tremendous sense of worthlessness and gave up on any aspirations I had.

“I became withdrawn and avoided meeting people or taking any kind of responsibility. In the end I had to seek medical help and ended up being prescribed medication to help with my feelings.

"I am still not the same person I was before the attack and I am also still suffering flashbacks and nightmares.

“I am so nervous now when I am out and I hear the sound of a revving car engine as it just takes me back and then it plays over in my mind what happened or what could have happened.

"I now don’t ever want to drive any kind of vehicle as a result."

Speaking about the attack and Gillon's sentencing, Detective Constable Matt Fagan said it was "extremely fortunate" the assault did not cause more serious harm.

He said: "This was a brutal attack which left the victim with serious injuries.

"I hope that now Gillon is safely behind bars it will give him reassurance and go some way towards helping him to move on with his life.”
