Face masks Ireland: The four 'reasonable excuses' for not wearing a mask on public transport and in shops

Face coverings are now mandatory on public transport and soon will be in shops with hefty fines for those not applying.

The move to make them compulsory in supermarkets, retail outlets and shopping centres was made on Wednesday as phase four was pushed back.

Coverings on public transport have been compulsory since the start of the month with compliance said to be good, according to authorities.

There are of course exceptions to every rule and you will not have to wear a mask under certain circumstances - as outlined below.

The Government has also asked people not to judge those without a mask as they may fall under one of the below categories;

Reasonable excuses not to wear a mask

  • You cannot put one on, wear or remove a face covering because of any physical or mental illness, impairment or disability or without severe distress.
  • You need to communicate with another person who has difficulties communicating.
  • To remove the face covering to provide emergency assistance or to provide care or assistance to a vulnerable person.
  • To remove the face covering to take medication.
  • The Regulations do not apply to children under the age of 13.
