Face masks could be mandatory for all office staff in England

Face masks could become mandatory for all office staff in England.

A minister has warned that all office staff could be made to wear face masks, reports the Metro.

This comes after ministers in Scotland met to discuss whether the rules on wearing masks in public places and indoors should be extended to office environments.

When asked if this could be something that England follows suit with, Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick said: "Some workplaces are asking their employees to do so voluntarily.

"It does have some benefit. So, I’m sure, as with other things, that will be taken into consideration by the Health Secretary and the chief medical officer, but we don’t have a plan today to take action in that respect."

However this appears to contradict what Health Secretary Matt Hancock said earlier this year.

According to the Telegraph, back in July, Hancock said: "No, that isn’t going to happen, and the reason is that in offices you tend to spend a lot of time with the same people, and so the way to stop the spread of the virus in offices is to have social distancing, either two metres or one metre plus mitigations in place."

The UK Government are expected to make an announcement 'in the coming days' on new restrictions within England reports the BBC.
