Face masks and strict social distancing in place as four League of Ireland clubs return to training

The League of Ireland's big four were back on the training ground today as the FAI moves on with the next phase of its return plans.

Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians and Derry City were all back on the pitch, with groups of fifteen, including coaching staff, allowed to train.

As the FAI plans to host a four-team tournament next month that will serve as a warm-up for the clubs' European qualifiers later this summer, the League of Ireland is back, but in uncharted waters.

With boss Stephen Bradley leading a session wearing a face mask, Hoops players were put through their paces this morning.

Elsewhere, Derry City striker Walter Figueira also sported a mask as Declan Devine's men made their return.

With strict non-contact measures in place, guidelines mean a stringent rotation basis of ‘15 in, 15 out’ is practiced.

Clubs are not permitted to have, say, two groups of 15 operating on site at the one time so players will have to arrive for training on a staggered, grouped basis.

It comes after no players or coaching staff tested positive for coronavirus in the second batch of test results last week.

The next round of Covid-19 testing takes place on that Monday and then again on Thursday.

Other SSE Airtricity League clubs are expected to return to collective training from 15 June.
