Face mask rules in Primark after restrictions ease on July 19

High street giant Primark is urging customers to continue wearing face masks when restrictions are lifted on July 19.

As well as being able to shop more freely, people are also looking forward to buying outfits for things they've not been able to do for well over a year, such as clubbing, and even going abroad for a holiday.

Ahead of 'freedom day', Boris Johnson told shoppers they would no longer be legally required to wear masks or social distance in shops.

However, shops have been given the right to uphold their own rules if they want to - and supermarkets like ASDA, Aldi, Tesco and Sainsbury's have already laid down the law in terms of what they expect from shoppers.

Primark, which has outlets in the Metrocentre and Newcastle city centre, has now said it hopes shoppers will wear a face covering "if they can", Manchester Evening News reports.

A Primark spokesperson said: "We want our customers and colleagues to continue to feel safe in our stores. Even though it will no longer be a legal requirement, we hope that people will continue to think of others and wear a face covering if they can.

"Across all of our stores in England we will continue to offer hand sanitisation stations, have Perspex screens up at our tills and operate an enhanced cleaning programme, to help keep everyone safe."

It comes as shoppers at the Metrocentre and Eldon Square were told they won't be denied entry if they ditch their masks from Monday.

Policies in the popular Gateshead and Newcastle shopping centres will change on 'Freedom Day' next week.

But centre bosses have said staff and customers should "feel free" to wear a mask if they want to, while individual shops will be allowed to set their own rules and may ask customers to cover their faces.

At both centres, the extra cleaning, hand sanitising stations and one-way systems introduced during the pandemic will stay in place.
