Face mask rules at Metrocentre and Eldon Square from this Friday

Those not wearing face masks on entering the North East's main shopping centres from Friday can expect to be asked to leave.

That's the warning from intu which runs Eldon Square in Newcastle and Metrocentre at Gateshead where it intends to ensure that all shop workers and customers comply with the Government rule coming into effect on July 24.

It says that face coverings must be worn on arrival at its centres and while walking around the malls, adding: "Anyone not wearing one, could be refused entry to the centre or asked to leave."

While some exceptions will be made - for children aged under 11 and for people with disabilities or breathing difficulties - the company is keen to ensure as safe an environment as possible at its busy Eldon Square and Metrocentre complexes.

Eight types of people exempt from wearing face masks

Gavin Prior, intu operations director, said that throughout the pandemic the company has been focused upon making the centres safe places to both visit and work and it will continue to follow the guidance from Public Health England and the Government.

He said: "In addition to the existing safety measures we already have in place, from July 24 everyone that visits the centre, whether that’s to work or to shop, will need to wear a face covering.

He added: "So far, over 80% of our brands are now open and we’re seeing more and more of our visitors returning every day.

"People are really enjoying being back, and making the most of a little retail therapy.

"We know that the experience will feel different; however we hope these measures will help provide all our visitors with additional reassurance."
