Face mask rule 'could be scrapped' on July 19 with amber countries made quarantine-free

They've played a huge part in our daily lives for most of the pandemic, but face mask rules could be scrapped in England on July 19, according to national reports.

The Government is reportedly set to announce a move away from regulation, and towards 'personal responsibility' when it comes to avoiding catching and spreading Covid, according to The Times.

Social distancing measures to stay two metres away from people could also be scrapped.

There are also reports that most of the 170 countries on the amber travel list could be made quarantine free on the same date - meaning you can go without having to stay home for 10 days on your return.

The Times reports the Government is expected to confirm on Monday that July 5 is too early to lift the final remaining lockdown restrictions.

But the Prime Minister is said to be increasingly optimistic that all remaining restrictions can be eased on July 19.

That would mean nightclubs reopening, large events allowed, the rule of six scrapped and mask wearing being labelled guidance rather than being compulsory.

A senior government source told the publication that ministers want to “get as close to normal as possible” on July 19 and that the emphasis will be on “personal responsibility” rather than laws and regulations.

Advice against trips to amber list countries would reportedly be dropped under the plans.

A Cabinet source told the publication there was 'clear evidence' vaccinations were working.

The source said: "It’s all over, even if not everyone in Government has realised it yet.

"The link between cases and deaths is broken. We know that double jabs work to protect people so why delay the resumption of international travel? There is no reason not to go ahead now – every day counts."
