Face coverings on public transport rules as new law comes into force today

From today it's illegal not to wear a face covering on public transport.

Any boarding a bus, train, subway, taxi, plane or ferry must cover up.

Nicola Sturgeon announced the new legislation as part of her phase two of Scotland's road map out of lockdown last Thursday.

But there are a few exceptions to the strict rule.

  • under fives don't need to cover up
  • a policeman or first responder in an emergency
  • staff separated by a physical barrier, eg, a bus driver behind a screen
  • anyone with a health condition where a mask would cause difficulty
  • where it is reasonable for someone to eat or drink
  • you need to take medication
  • to speak with someone who lip reads
  • when asked to remove it by a relevant authority, eg, a police officer

While the public is required to provide their own face coverings, Scotrail is distributing them free at some train stations this morning.

These include: Queen Street, Central, Exhibition Centre, Hyndland, Argyle Street, Johnstone Paisley Gilmour Street, Airdrie, Dalmuir and Motherwell.

And you don't necessarily have to wear a mask, any piece of cloth that covers your mouth and nose is fine, for instance a scarf.

Religious face coverings also count.

Transport Secretary Michael Matheson stressed last week: "The use of face coverings forms a fundamental part of gaining that public trust.

“We are asking people to take personal responsibility to do the right thing.

"Wearing a face covering while on public transport means you are playing your part in the collective effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus and reducing the risk to your fellow citizens.

"These measures complement physical distancing and good hand hygiene, they do not replace them. ”
