Face coverings could become mandatory in Scotland’s enclosed spaces says Nicola Sturgeon

Face coverings could become mandatory in enclosed places in Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon has said.

During the daily press briefing this afternoon, the First Minister said it is "something we are considering” but that the Scottish Government has not yet "reached a final position" concerning the guidance.

She added that any decision made in the future would include necessary exemptions, such as the need for children to wear any kind of mask.

Ms Sturgeon reiterated the Government's position that coverings should be worn in enclosed public spaces - especially in situations where physical distancing is difficult and where there is a risk of close contact with people you don't usually meet.

"I am asking you to do it because we think there is a real benefit", she said. “We want to make sure we are doing everything we can to reduce transmission”.

The First Minister also stressed that the topic concerns face coverings as opposed to "medical grade" masks - encouraging use of those that can be made at home using cloth, textiles and old t-shirts.

At the moment, Government advice issued on face coverings states that there "may be some benefit to wearing them in enclosed spaces".

This includes while travelling on public transport or entering a food shop where it is not always possible to maintain a two metre distance from another customer or staff member.
