Fabulous food festivals

The opening ceremony of Whitstable Oyster Festival 2008
Between Saturday July 19 and Sunday July 27, Whitstable's Oyster Festival is the place to be. Last year colourful 'fish-slappers' entertained onlookers with their percussion and dancing in fishy costume. This year, inspired by neighbouring towns, the parade will include Whitstable's own town giant 'Captain Sam'. There will also be plenty of places to sample locally sourced food.

ethical eggs
It's Ethical Egg Week from August 4 to August 10 and like our own Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall we want you to ditch the battery nasties and fork out for free range. Activities will be many and varied throughout the week and will include the opportunity to adopt an ethical hen. We're not quite sure what an ethical hen is but presumably it only wears Fairtrade feathers

watermelon rose
Summer's favourite fruit is back! Full of antioxidants and vitamins, not to mention all that water keeping you hydrated, it's a superfood which means it gets it's very own National Watermelon Day. In celebration of the humble fruit, the West End's Dirty Dancing is offering a free pair of tickets to the first 20 people to carry a watermelon to the Aldwych theatre at 10am on August 4.

crabs in a pot
For those who are planning to visit Norway between August 4 and 10, we recommend popping down south to the Skalldyrfestivalen (Shellfish Festival) where you can eat your fill of delicous seafood caught fresh, and still wiggling, from the sea.

The website's in Norwegian but don't let that put you off!

CAMRA beer festival
A picture to inspire anyway to attend the CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) Great British Beer Festival at Earl's Court, London from August 5 to 9. Golden ales, fruit beers, stouts, bitters and some international real lagers will be available, as well as a great selection of cider and perry. Other attractions include the popular Novelty Hat Day. super hot chilli
Get ready to burn! West Dean Gardens in Chichester are hosting a Chilli Fiesta. From mild varieties to ear-steam-producing hot kinds, 250 chillies and sweet peppers will be on display in the restored Victorian glasshouses. There will be food tasting, chilli growing and cooking demonstrations and Latin rhythms and salsa dancing will be on offer.
