Fabolous has claimed he was reprimanded by Beyoncé for a song lyric comparing her to her sister Solange.
The rapper said Beyoncé took offence to a line in the 2010 track “For the Money”, in which he raps: “I never do the bronze ’cause if you could have Beyoncé, would you take Solange?”
“Sometimes you say punchlines or say things in music or rap… you may not any know any seriousness behind it," he explained on US radio show The Breakfast Club.
“There was a freestyle, or a song or something and I said, ‘If you can have Beyoncé, would you take Solange?’ The first person I saw was B… She was telling me that they rock with me and know me… I didn’t see the deeper side of it.”
He added: “She told me, ‘These are people – saying something like that could personally hurt her… The tongue is mighty and when you say something, especially somebody of your stature… make sure it’s what you want to say because you could be hurting somebody you don’t even know.’”
The rapper said he apologised to Solange, who had first heard the lyric when dancing in a club. "I ended up seeing her at Soho House one day," he said. "It was years ago... I was like, all right, let me beeline to Solange and apologise. And Solange, she was stiff... I was like, 'Yo, I just want you to know I didn't mean it in any malice, but I do take responsibility for saying that and I apologise.'"
Fabolous said the exchange has made him much more conscious about including potentially hurtful lyrics just because they are catchy.
