Fabio Cannavaro on "crazy" Liverpool title situation and what should happen

World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro has offered his sympathy to Liverpool over the current position they find themselves in.

The Reds were just two wins away from being crowned Premier League champions and sat 25 points clear of second-placed Manchester City before football was brought to halt due to the coronavirus outbreak.

However, it appears that Jurgen Klopp’s side will not be denied their first league title in 30 years with plans well underway for the Premier League to restart in June behind closed doors.

But for Cannavaro, no matter what happens from here, he believes the Reds deserve to be celebrating the title after having an “amazing” season.

“It is crazy, just crazy,” he told Sky Sports News. “To be honest with you, I appreciate them because they did an amazing season, they did an amazing job.

“They deserve to win and celebrate this league. But unfortunately we are in this sort of situation. It is a shame for them.”

The former Real Madrid and Juventus star is the last defender to win the Ballon d'Or back in 2006.

Since then, the award has been dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and Cannavaro believes Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, who came second to Messi last season, is unlucky to be up against two greats of the game at this moment in time.

“To be honest with you, I sent him a message to congratulate him on what he did last season,” he replied when asked about Dutchman coming second in last year’s standings.

“As a defender, it is difficult. As a defender, you don’t just need to do great during your season, you don’t just need to win the trophies.

"Actually you need to be lucky not to have the strikers like Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo in front of you. This is the key.”
