Fabio Aurelio reveals what really happened at Liverpool training ground after infamous Rafa Benitez 'rant'

Former Liverpool star Fabio Aurelio has shared how the dressing room reacted to Rafa Benitez's infamous 'facts' rant back in 2009.

Benitez went on a emotional rant during a press conference in the 2008/09 season amid a fiery title race with rivals Manchester United.

The Reds were top of the table at the time and the Spaniard was responding to comments made by then-United manager Sir Alex Ferguson regarding the fixture list.

Aurelio has now revealed the team's response to the rant and how it boosted the team moving forward, despite United eventually pipping Liverpool to the title at the end of the season.

"Yes, we players spoke about the rant at training afterwards; it was quite funny," he told FourFourTwo.

"We were not expecting that speech and Rafa definitely knew what he was doing. It was funny to see how many times he used the word 'fact'.

"The media made fun of Benitez, but that was a turning point for us. Somehow it gave us a further boost for the following games.

"We improved our football from that moment onwards. That's another fact!"

Benitez spoke for around four minutes, listing off all the problems he had with Ferguson and the 'favouritism' he saw towards United, repeating the word 'facts' a number of times.

This wasn't the first time the Scot had gotten under the skin of a fellow manager, as Kevin Keegan had a similar 'I will love it' outburst following comments made by Ferguson back in 1996.
