Fabinho on his battle with Lionel Messi and what really made the difference for Liverpool against Barcelona

Fabinho has revealed how Liverpool left their "life on the ground" as they shackled Lionel Messi to reach a second successive Champions League final.

The Reds overturned a 3-0 first-leg deficit by smashing Barcelona 4-0 at a raucous Anfield on Tuesday night.

Key to that was keeping quiet Lionel Messi, who had scored twice in Camp Nou last week.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson reveals the lengths he went to stay on the pitch against Barcelona

Fabinho excelled in his spoiling role up against the Argentine, despite walking a disciplinary tightrope for much of the game having been wrongly booked for an early foul on Luis Suarez.

But the Liverpool midfielder believes it was a collective effort in shutting down Messi.

"The whole team defended - we left our life on the ground," said Fabinho.

"I tried to do everything so that the ball does not reach him."

Divock Origi and substitute Gini Wijnaldum both scored twice to send Liverpool into the final on June 1 at Atletico Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

And Fabinho believes Origi's seventh-minute opener was the spark for a remarkable recovery.

"We did not have a lot of time after a very difficult game in Newcastle but we are preparing a whole season to experience moments like that," he told RMC Sport.

"After the first game I said that the result was not good but that our performance was.
