Fabinho absence explained as Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp gives injury update

Jurgen Klopp says Fabinho's absence against Tottenham is precautionary after his injury in training on Thursday.

Fabinho misses the game against Tottenham with what the club have described as a minor muscle problem.

Joel Matip does return for the Reds but he will be playing alongside captain Jordan Henderson.

Midfielder Fabinho was part of the Liverpool squad that trained at Leyton Orient's Breyer Group Stadium on Thursday, but was pictured sitting on the sidelines as Klopp talked to the rest of the squad in the centre circle.

The Brazilian did not make the trip with the rest of his team-mates to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and will now be assessed on Friday ahead of Sunday's visit to West Ham.

Klopp said: "That is our situation at the moment. Actually it was nothing, really.

"He just felt something and we had to take him out [of training] and now he is out.

"It was not a challenge or whatever or an intense situation, it was just how things happen. That is how it is.

The news will come as yet another hammer blow to Liverpool who have been forced to play through virtually the entirety of the season with issues at centre-back.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both face uphill battles to play a role in the rest of this season after suffering respective knee injuries in October and November, while Matip has been in and out the team throughout the campaign.

The ongoing problems have forced midfielder Fabinho to play the majority of the season as a makeshift centre-back and Klopp has been forced to use the inexperienced duo of Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams at times in Matip's absence.

Henderson will be playing his third game as a defender this season after previously turning out alongside Fabinho against Southampton and Manchester United earlier this month.

Klopp added: "It will be another intense game, I am pretty sure.

"They have a compact formation and we have to find a solution for that. Obviously a massive counter-attacking threat, but not only because they play football as well, so I am pretty sure it will be intense."
