Fabian Schar's brutally honest assessment of Newcastle United's 1-1 draw at AFC Bournemouth

Fabian Schar has given an honest verdict after Newcastle United were held by AFC Bournemouth on the South Coast.

The Switzerland international felt that Newcastle were lacking a cutting edge in the final third and cited a failure to create better chances as the reason two points slipped away.

But he was also happy to point out the positives as he kept up a 17-game unbeaten run and his own personal unbeaten run going.

Speaking in the mixed zone after the 1-1 draw, Schar said: "It's a big disappointment. We wanted three points. We knew it was a tough place to come but in the end, it wasn't enough what we did.

"I think in the final third, creating chances, it's not as much as we can normally do. They defended quite deep and we had to break them down. We had to take the point in the end."

But Schar saw no reason to panic after two consecutive draws kept Spurs in the hunt for the top four. The long serving centre-back accepted that Newcastle can't win every week.

Schar said: "It is part of the season. If you are going for the Premier League you need to win every week but every Saturday brings a tough game.

"We are unbeaten in 17 games so that is something we can be proud of. It is good to know we can still get a point if we don't win so we must keep working hard."

Schar stated his confidence was now at a level where he feels the team can emerge with a point on days where they aren't at their very best.

He said: "The confidence is there for the whole team I think. It is good to know that we are also hard to break down. We should not read too much into stats and go game by game though. We need to be looking to take the points as much as possible."

Yet this game could have been very different had it not been for Kieran Trippier's heroic clearance at the end. The England man was on hand to calmly clear off the line with Nick Pope beaten by Dominic Solanke's back-heel.

Schar said: "I was quite close to it and I was thinking 'please don't hit me'. So I am pleased he cleared it."
