Fabian Schar reveals extent of horror head wound as Georgian player prevents him from swallowing tongue

Newcastle United's back-room team were left deeply concerned after Fabian Schar was allowed to play on after a sickening clash of heads in a Euro 2020 qualifier against Georgia.

Schar clashed heads with Jemal Tabidze after 24 minutes of the game, and was unconscious for four minutes as Jano Ananidze rushed to his aid and inserted his hand to free the Newcastle player's tongue.

After the game Schar insisted he was OK, and told Swiss newspaper Blick: "It looks awful, I can't remember anything.

"I was out for a few seconds.

"My skull is still humming.

"And I've got a neck-ache and a bruise on my forehead.

"But it was worth it."

The centre-back was allowed to play the full 90 minutes but the decision has been widely criticised.

FIFA rules state that players suffering from concussion should sit out matches for six days, although Schar is suspended for United's next game at Arsenal in any case.

But the decision to allow Schar to continue has been widely criticised by fans, medics and former players including the father of 14-year-old Ben Robinson who died after sustaining a head injury playing rugby.

After Schar's injury over the weekend Peter Robinson posted: "This is shameful and a terrible example to all the kids watching.

"Culture change needed.

"Medics need stood down.
