Fabian Schar red card appeal turned down as Newcastle defender must serve ban

Newcastle United have had an attempt to get Fabian Schar's three-game ban chalked off turned down.

The Switzerland international was dismissed in stoppage time in the 2-0 defeat against Arsenal and will now sit out three games, denting his fitness hopes for Euro 2020.

Although, he will be able to play one more game for the Magpies this season.

Newcastle hope that Schar will sign a new contract extension before he heads to the tournament.

A club statement read: "Newcastle United’s appeal against Fabian Schär’s red card, picked up during Sunday’s match against Arsenal, has been unsuccessful.

"Schär was dismissed by referee Mike Dean in the 90th minute of the game following a tackle on Gabriel Martinelli.

"An independent panel reviewed the incident following United’s appeal to the Football Association but has upheld the decision.

"The Swiss defender will miss United’s next three matches against Leicester City, Manchester City and Sheffield United."
