Fabian Schar happy with first season in the Premier League - despite tough start

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar is happy with his debut Premier League season - even if he admits it wasn't the best of starts.

The Swiss defender impressed in the final run-in as United secured a 13th place finish in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old finished the campaign as the club's third highest scorer after netting four goals including the third in the 4-0 win over Fulham on the final day of the season.

The goal capped off a superb debut season in England's top flight - although Schar admits it hasn't all been plain sailing.

"I had a quite hard start, like the whole team. I think the whole team struggled a lot the first 10 games, but then we started getting points and doing a good job over the whole season.

"I think, for me and the team, the second part was quite good and we can be proud of the end. For me, it was also a quite good season when I look now."

"I enjoy playing in the Premier League, especially for this club and these amazing fans. I look forward for the next year."

Schar's strike against Burnley is the goal that stands out for many but his goal on the final day of the season was an important one to ensure all three points were secured.

Schar felt the victory over Fulham was the 'perfect end' to the season.

"It was the perfect end, I think, for us.

"To get one position above at the end, and to give the fans something, was the perfect game for us.

"It was a quite good day for us."

As usual United fans packed out the away end with thousands taking to the River Thames on boats to soak up the pre-game atmosphere.

United fans were in full voice throughout the game - something that didn't go unnoticed.

"It's great for us, for the whole team, to get this support every game.

"At home games or away, they're always there, and they give us some really good support. That's what we need."
