Fabian Schar could be handed lifeline to revive his Newcastle United career

Fabian Schar could be handed a lifeline to revive his Newcastle United career.

The Switzerland international is about four weeks away from fitness meaning he could end up staying on Tyneside before the window slams shut.

It has now emerged that Schar - who dislocated his shoulder against Spurs last season - will have an extra year's option on his existing deal.

Of course, Schar could turn down the extension but after attracting interest from other clubs this summer he also has the opportunity to knuckle down at Benton and win his place back.

When asked about Schar’s fitness levels, Steve Bruce said: “He’s trying to get back, but dislocated his shoulder, so he had an operation.

“So he’s still at least four weeks away.”

At the moment, United have other business on their hands as they look to offload a clutch of squad players.

Steve Bruce said: "The likes of Henri Saivet, Rolando Aarons and Achraf Lazaar could go and kickstart their careers elsewhere."

United are close to announcing a loan departure for Florian Lejeune to Spanish club Alaves.
