Fabian Rieder to Celtic 'wow' factor amid £15million asking price

Should Celtic sign Fabian Rieder, it would signal a new era of spending for the Hoops.

That's according to Falkirk player Stephen McGinn.

The former St Mirren, Dundee, Hibs, and Kilmarnock midfielder reckons the Hoops potentially shelling out £15million for a player would signify a big change for the Scottish champions.

The playmaker, 21, has attracted plenty of attention from interested parties across Europe.

He featured at the World Cup for Switzerland last year and has been a regular for Young Boys for some time.

Brendan Rodgers is said to be an admirer of the attacking midfielder.

At the weekend, Young Boys' sporting director conceded it was likely that Rieder would move abroad in the near future for a significant fee.

And while the Hoops have plenty of money in the bank, ready for Rodgers to spend, it's believed Rieder would cost upwards of £15m.

McGinn insists this would be "next level" for Celtic in terms of their recruitment strategy.

He said on Go Radio's Football Show: "With all the talk of Brendan Rodgers and taking them to the next level in Europe it's probably the first signing that suggests that. Some of the players that have been suggested and have been signed so far are the type of signings Celtic have been making in the last five or six years.

"I think Reider is one of those next level signings. I think as far back as 25 years the signing limit for Celtic has been around that £5-£6million mark.

"It would take upwards of £14-£15million to sign Reider and it's the 'wow' signing that shows that it's not a fantasy about taking Celtic to the next level and the board saying 'we have the money here so to make that progression we are not just going to sign the projects, we are going to sign the next level projects'.

"It's the first player of this kind of new vision of taking Celtic to the next level."

Celtic have already signed Odin Thiago Holm and Marco Tilio this summer. A move for Yang Hyun-jun is also edging closer.
